The Periwinkle Foundation Presents Making A Mark®, an exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and blood disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers. Making A Mark enables children with cancer and their siblings to celebrate self-expression and empowerment through creativity as a vital part of the healing process. Making A Mark Traveling Exhibit
The Making A Mark Traveling Exhibit is open to children from treatment centers all over the world. We have been proud to display over 200 entries annually since the first exhibit. This year, the exhibit features over 330 pieces of art representing six different countries. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the artwork is exhibited at Texas Children’s Hospital which is the first stop on a journey traveling to venues throughout the country.
Postcards from the Road
The most powerful part of the Making A Mark project is the ability of these young artists to reach far beyond the realities
of their treatment and touch people worldwide. The Periwinkle Foundation’s Postcards From the Road program allows people who view the traveling exhibit to write a postcard to the artists. The Periwinkle Foundation mails each postcard to the artists to share with them the well-wishes and inspirational words their art inspires. Here are some examples of postcards we have received:
“I was walking through Hobby Airport and stopped to look at the art work. Your picture of the bare tree is beautiful – but not nearly as beautiful as your heart. Thank you for sharing. My life is better today than yesterday.”
“You are beautiful. I am a stage 4 cancer survivor of over 11 years. You will definitely survive and thrive and be stronger inside and out and help to change the world.”
Making A Mark Children’s Party
In celebration of the Making A Mark Opening Exhibit Reception, we begin the weekend with a Friday morning in-clinic party for the children and families in the waiting room and infusion centers at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers. Activities include arts and crafts, music, and even a photo booth! Click here to view photos from the Children’s Party.
Making A Mark Opening Exhibit Reception
The Making A Mark Opening Exhibit Reception is held each September on the Auxilliary Bridge at Texas Children’s Hospital in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All works of art submitted by artists are displayed to create a moving and emotional exhibit. This year, the Making A Mark Opening Exhibit Reception was Saturday, September 12th and was a tremendous success! Making A Mark Guest Artist Project
Each year, The Periwinkle Foundation invites a local artist to create a collaborative project with patients at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers during their treatment. The guest artist guides and curates the project to create a final piece of art for display. This year’s guest artist is the Aurora Picture Show who is creating a collaborative stop-action animation film with patient, siblings and long term survivors. Previous guest artists include Ann Johnson, John Palmer, Kermit Eisenhut, Kelly Gale Amen, Bert Long, Reginald Adams and more…
This project is funded in part by a grant from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance
